This is a boat that we have in our inventory that gets a lot of quizzical looks. It seems to be sort of an enigma. I’m going to try to explain it best I can.
“What the heck is a Robert Perry Custom 36?”. It’s a boat that was designed by Robert Perry, and it was a single boat (nicknamed a “Boomer”), custom made for the buyer. It was designed by Robert H. Perry, based in Seattle, WA. His designs include some of the most famous and successful modern cruisers, most notably the Tayana 37 and the Valiant 40. He has designed yachts for companies such as Cheoy Lee, Tayana, Passport, and Islander. It’s a 36-foot fractional rigged sloop, designed to be light, fast and easy to handle.
“What is so special about it?”. There are no other hulls. This is it. 1 of 1 made. It was made at a cost of approximately $300,000. It was custom fabricated for day sailing and racing. It’s like a custom sports car.
“Why would I buy it?”. If you like to beat the stuffing out of other boats in “beer can” or short to medium distance racing, this is for you. If you want to have a boat that can easily seat a large group of folks for a day sail, this is for you. If you have a sailing school, this is for you.
“How fast is it?” It has a PHRF rating of 75. That’s similar to boats such as a Beneteau 36.7, some Beneteau 42s, some C&C 41s, a Hunter Legend 45, or some J/109s, to name a few. It weighs in at 6700 lbs. My 30 footer weighs about 10,500 lbs., and rates 177.
“Is it easy to handle for a small crew?” It’s made for one or two people to handle. The main and head sail go up with electric winches. The carbon fiber boom has a “U” shape and lazy jacks to make dropping the main sail a breeze. Everything, even the electrical controls, are in the cockpit. No need to go below except to use the head.
“What does it have that will help me to race or sail it?” It has a full set of instruments from Raymarine including wind speed and direction, depth sounder, chart plotter, autopilot, and VHF radio, all in the cockpit. All the winches are at working height, and the cockpit has more than adequate room for a larger crew. It has a built in bow sprit to fly an asymmetrical furling spinnaker.
“What else does it have?” It has an electric cooler/heater (much like a cooler but runs off 12vdc), rod rigging, 2 main sails, a furling asymmetrical spinnaker, dual helm stations with wheel steering and redundant instruments at both wheels.
It’s really a one of kind boat. There isn’t another one out there. That’s why no one is really aware of it. If a fast, unique, simple to sail boat appeals to you, you need to have a take at this Robert Perry Custom 36. Feel free to call and set up a demo sail!
